What Are They?

A stand-up pouch bag, also known as stand bags, are made of multiple layers of barrier film that are laminated together in order to create one continuous sheet. In general, these bags are made of 2-3 layers, an outer layer, a middle layer, and an inner layer that play a role in the water-proof and airtight features of the bag. These layers each have the purpose of protecting the bags contents from various elements such as moisture, UV light, oxygen, and external odors. To facilitate its use to customers, these bags generally have a tear notch. That is a small slit in the end seal of the bag that allows customers to easily tear the sealed film in order to access its contents. Moreover, these bags also have built in zip logs to allow the customers to easily reseal the bag on their own, in order to protect the product inside.  Lastly, stand up bags are able to freely stand on its own due to its expandable bottom gusset. A high quality stand up bag has a sturdy, u-shaped gusseted bottom, allowing the bag to stand without collapsing.

The outer layer

The outer layer is usually made with either paper or plastic (polyethylene), generally resistant to puncture and tear. The decision to choose either material completely depends on the type of product you are packaging and your company’s message in general, as well as the type of labelling and stamping that you have in mind. The outer layer is the first thing the customer sees when they look at a stand-up pouch bag. That is why this layer is precisely customized to draw in the customer and to communicate your brand’s message.

The middle layer

The middle layer can be made of a various of film materials but the most commonly used are the following: Aluminum foil (AL), a metalized film (VMPET), or polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) which is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family. The PETE or PET is usually used for food and beverages, personal care products and many other consumer products. Between the AL and the VMPET, the AL offers a much higher end appearance and keeps the products fresh for much longer (20 months vs 13 months).

The inner layer

Lastly, when it comes to packaging food, the inner layer is extremely important as it is directly in contact with the food and must be FDA approved. The most common material used in stand-up pouches for the inner layer is linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and that is because this material is safe to use in direct contact with food as well as FDA approved. This inner layer is also what allows the stand-up bags to be heart sealed. Heat sealing your bags is important because it gives your product a tamper-evident seal, which is reassuring to the customer that the product has not be tampered with.

Why choose stand up pouch bags?

Shape and size diversity

Stand up pouches are one of the rare types of packaging that can be customized in a thousand different ways and comes in many shapes and sizes, all relevant to your needs. This type of packaging allows you to creatively show off your brand and make a memorable image of your product to your customers. Unlike sticking a label to a somewhat boring package, stand up pouches can be personalized from top to sides and back. This enables you to choose the font, graphics, and colors in accordance with your brand and helps you stand out from the crowd. As mentioned, these bags come from a variety of shapes and sizes with the most common one being the standard pouch, which is a round-bottom-gusset bag that folds flat when empty. It comes in different versions such as K-sealed, quad-sealed and can even be die cut into custom shapes to really stand out. With stand up pouch bags, you also have the possibility of choosing transparent materials that will allow your customers to see your product before purchase.

Visuals

One of the most obvious advantages of stand-up pouches is the fact that the largest printable surface of the package stands up and faces the customer. This gives you a larger competitive advantage compared to lay-down bags and smaller rigid containers. When these bags are mixed with colorful attention-grabbing graphics and high-quality HD printing machines, they strengthen brand representation and are impossible to ignore on the shelf. Consequently, no matter how the bag is displayed on the shelf, customers will unmistakably recognize your product.

Flexible packaging

Stand up pouches are considered to be one of the most versatile and flexible type of packaging because they can be used to store a large variety of products and have the ability to be used for multiple processing requirements. With stand up pouches, it doesn’t matter what you produce because they are flexible enough to store a wide range of products from various industries. Examples are baking goods, snacks, coffee, toys, dog food and many more. Overall, it doesn’t matter if you are already relying on other less efficient packaging because depending on the type of your product, you can easily switch to lightweight flexible packaging like stand-up pouches and enjoy the advantages of your new packaging.

Cost reduction

Every business wants to reduce its costs and increase its profit margins and one of the easiest solutions to achieve high profitable margins is to switch your packaging to flexible packaging such as stand-up pouches as they will reduce your material costs by a lot. To give you an idea of how much you would be saving, it is important to know that rigid packaging costs up to 6 times more per unit than flexible packaging. Similarly, printed folding cartons also cost twice as much as flexible packaging. Wonder how? Simply because flexible packaging is much thinner than most other types of packaging and also requires less raw materials than found in glass bottles, rigid cartons, or cans. Not only this change in packaging reduces the overall manufacturing costs, it also significantly reduces delivery and distribution. That is because with stand up pouches, you can fit up to 10 times the number of units in a single truck using fewer pallets depending on the original packaging solution. This results in more product in less space and demands less time and labour than rigid packaging. Also, since flexible packaging is lighter than most others, the fuel cost per truck will also be reduced.

Convenient Features

Stand up pouches have proven themselves to be incredibly convenient to consumers because of their many possible add-ons features such as re-closable zippers, tear notches, valves, ergonomic handles, euro or pound punch holes, rounded corners and many more. Due to these futures, many customers are attracted to stand up pouches when purchasing a product as they are lightweight, easy to transport, resistant to puncture/breakage and easy to use.

Product safety

Using a stand-up pouch with resealable zip lock and up to three layers of protection, as well as a gusset at the bottom, not only your products will stay fresher for much longer, but your customers will also have the freedom to use your product at their own pace without the additional stress of keeping the product safe, as the bag will do that for you. By using different puncture-resistant films for extra protection, pouch bags can be designed to protect your products against moisture, oxygen, UV rays, infestation, external odours and other contaminants during transport, storage, and usage.

Sustainability

Finally, if all these advantages are not enough, there is one more reason why you might want to switch to stand up pouches and that is because they are much better for the environment than other types of packaging. Firstly, flexible packaging in general takes much less raw materials, energy, and water to make which results in the production of fewer volatile organic compounds. Lastly, stand up pouches can easily be recyclable or biodegradable without compromising on safety or quality.
